amorphus subtraction

amorphus subtraction reacts to the surrounding pedestrian and vehicular cirrculation , subtracting mass to accomodate light & space to enhance life within direct proximity to the new urban block. the area around the 33,600 sq. ft. lot located on the north side of Huron St. and in-between Orleans St. & Franklin St. consists of apartment buildings, art galleries, offices, furniture stores, cafes and restaurants.  The site is located at a crossroads for car, rail, pedestrian and bus traffic. To accomodate this, the amorphus subtraction connects directly to the Brown line’s extended station platrom that wraps around the side of the building leading to the wide open storefront businesses that are located within the first two floors of the building.  The building is seemingly pinched to the right of the center, seperating the residential block from the commercial & retail. the residential block, although conviently placed within close proximity of transportation, is seperated from the ‘L’ by the commercial block. amorphus subtraction takes an organic approach to the urban problem of people living within the city while maintaining individuality, light, diversity, green and personal space.  the new urban block flares outward as it rises, adding floor space while maintaining public sidewalk space & creating a green roof space that is open to the public, yet closed off from the personal space. the facade of amorphus subtraction is populated by circular subtractions that grow in size as the circulation rises that correlates to public and private space while lighting the interior space through natural light portals located on the skin of the structure.
